Thanks for that, Johnboy, but if people want to take the slime off who am I to stop them.
I don't think I really want to start one on which way up is best as I am not selling tweezers or magnifying glasses

at breakfast this morning i gave our two primary aged children a lecture on not constantly trying to wind each other up and not rising to it every time the other one tried it on.
guess id better put my wooden spoon away and go and earn a crust

I'm no expert on the tomato seeds, but following a Bob Flowerdew recommendation, I have started taking cuttings off my tomato plants in the autumn. (Simple cuttings dipped in rooting hormone.) I find I lose about half the starts, so overdo it...but I can overwinter a lot of them and have nice, mature plants to go out in the spring as soon as the soil is warm enough. (Though I did find I had to take another set of cuttings as they grew too big...)
