I think it depends on how many people live with you. I live alone, so I do not need to use a dishwasher at all, because it is easier to clean the dishes by myself. But my sister uses it and she waits for the big amount of dishes to wash it

Very simple, a dishwasher for the whole family, washing by hand for 1-2 people in the family

From a hygiene point of view, the dishwasher is better. The main reason being that it's likely to give it a hotter and more thorough rinse than anyone handwashing would probably do. It also usually finishes with a drying 'cycle' so there's no need for people to 'dry the dishes'. This avoids the possibilty of anyone using a less than pristine cloth. (I'm sure no one here would!) Just saying what's the usual in a commercial kitchen.
