When I was in Thailand four years ago I slipped off under water rocks when fording a river below a waterfall. My left foot was wedged in a crevice so as I fell my knee twisted round and snapped and tore the ligaments and tendons. My son found help and I was stretchered out of the forest. I spent the rest of the holiday lounging in a garden after being xrayed and bandaged up at hospital and having a shot of morphine and a bag of assorted pain killers. My son bought me some crutches and I had a practice going up and down a few steps a couple of days before I was due to return. I came back from Southern Thailand on my own by mini bus and three planes on crutches, carrying a rucksack.
The mini bus for the airport stopped on the far side of a dual carriageway so I had to cross four lanes of traffic at speed, in agony, on crutches, carrying a large rucksack. Surprising how fast you can move when you have to
