Don't give up - visit Alnwick. They have an area under lock and key that you can only visit under supervision. You will be amazed what you can grow that is deadly. "But your honour if I hadn't been on a diet I would have eaten it as well, I had no idea is was poisonous".

My OH used to refer to my mother (when she was alive) as the exocet - you couldn't hear her coming, but you knew she was and there wasn't a d*** thing you could do to stop her.
