The "hurricane" has really been very strange around here. Despite the gale-force winds forecast and recorded for NW Wales, on this bit of the south-facing coast the winds have been fairly light. And today, when winds are forecast to be still strong, though decreasing, there is not a breath of wind.

I wonder whether the rest of you will believe me! Reminds me of January 2010 when we were one of the few places in the UK not blanketed in snow.

Quite a bit of damage elsewhere though very little wind here and blue sky overhead, rather cool though. For those of you in the affected areas, I hope all is well and not too much damage

Weirdly warm windy weather.

A little more warmth would be nice, the outdoor grape is just starting to change colour and ripen, we had a good crop from the leaders in the greenhouse, same vine part under cover part not. An indian summer now would be great, especially for those whose tomatoes were late ripening.

It was a bit frightening trying to put some battens across one of the polycarbonate sheets on my shed roof that was making a bid for freedom at nine o'clock last night. It is still there today so I think I shall be able to repair it eventually, still too windy to think about it today. Some nice sunshine between the bursts of rain.

We went to the allotment this morning and, as predicted, the wind was vicious and we could hardly stand up. Tied back the sunflowers but the rest will have to wait until it calms down.

Hope the Harrogate Flower Show will go ahead as planned at the end of this week. They must be battling putting the marquees up right now!

This talk of microclimates set me thinking of my childhood, we lived on the island of Jersey. We would exit the house,, wet a finger with our mouth stick the finger up in the air to determine wind direction and set off for the opposite side of the island to enjoy a beach picnic sheltered from the wind.

Strange light in the sky today.

Same here, Geoff. Around 6am this morning, the sky was deep pink and purple and the valley below us covered in thick white mist. Now, around 8.30, the sun is high in the sky and the mist has mostly dispersed. A lovely autumn morning!

I hope you are all getting the same, beautiful blue sky here today and really warm, too nice to stay in and do chores.

Glorious sunny day. Repaired shed roof and planted Japanese Onion plants and Garlic - never know when there will be another reasonable day.

Today's bright intervals were followed by loud rumbling noises and accompanied by torrential rain.
