Another day struggles to dawn, sees the rain and gives up trying

Oh, Alan, you sound really dejected. I do hope the sun came out for you after all. It rained here this morning (and we could still do with some more, so I am not sorry), but now it's brightened up, and it's rather warm - good growing weather.

Wet here again - we got soaked to the skin picking fruit and beans but it had to be done!

And it looks as if Alan is in for a really wet day tomorrow.

Perhaps that's why the first piece of advice on Dŵr Cymru's leaflet on saving water in the garden this summer is "Use a hosepipe". No kidding.

I'm rather glad that Wales is having more than it's fair share of the of rain because this means that Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool will be assured of a good supply of water!
No doubt the Welsh will be the ones to get the hose pipe ban!
My water here comes from the Elan Valley Rhayader off the Birmingham aquifer for the next few weeks when I am being transferred to a new Welsh Water main which was laid passing my property last year but I will remain a customer of Severn Trent Water. The villages either side fed from the same main will be Welsh Water.
I will say that any Welsh towns or villages between Rhayader and many in Herefordshire and Worcester do get fed from these reservoirs.
But I do think that for the Welsh to be short of water, as they are, without some of the water from some of the reservoirs going their way is totally wrong. Now that everything is privatised there is scant chance of any changes.

Oh Alan, that does sound unfair, getting all the rain and then having it siphoned elsewhere while you suffer hosepipe bans, only surplus water going would be fair, why not write to your MP it's supposed to be a fair society, so they keep telling us !
I live in the south east and we are getting really very little rain, but I eke it out, by having lots of water butts and mulching the beds to reduce loss.

We have definitely not got a hosepipe ban here - Dŵr Cymru's leaflet also said water supplies were at 72% of normal, or above, and that was in June before the rains of July. They were advising the use of a hosepipe rather than sprinklers.

What remains as a wound on the Welsh consciousness is the past flooding of communities to form reservoirs to supply English cities. This has happened in England too, but here what were lost were farming communities which were linguistically and culturally Welsh. The flooding of Capel Celyn in the 1960s by Liverpool City Council was responsible for the revival of militant Welsh nationalism. Cofiwch Dryweryn (Remember Tryweryn) became the rallying cry for a new generation of nationalists, many of whom are still politically active. Here's the story - worth a read:

Apparantly,the average rainfall for Wales in July is 78m.m.Our local weatherman said that we have had 140m.m. so far this month which is nearly 6 inches in proper figures.
