My dad loved his garden/smallholder and ministry issue reference books...I suspect I wouldn't have to look very far to find the books specifically on tomato growing and greenhouses when he was planning to build his new greenhouse in 1968/69. Sideboard cupboard maybe..just open the door carefully else a load of stuff will spill out...
...and a moth eaten copy of The Vegetable Garden Displayed with proper long rows.
We had an inch and three quarters rain Thurs/Friday/Sat morning....quickly put the river up to the top but seemed to stay within its bounds.
Only one little task completed in the back garden today....quick cut out of Loch Ness blackberry and tie new onto the frame. It was a little job too, as new material a bit thin and short...the dry summer and once again the age of the plant....everything here is quietly getting rather dated..
I see that wintry showers have now been added onto the Thursday forecast.

It's way more complex & precise than I anticipated, but well worth reading. The more I am reading the more I am understanding & making notes in my book. I'm pleased I asked the question so I do things right from now...future time saved for a start! I only have 5 trees, well 6 if your count the cherry tree which has only given 1 single cherry in it's 20yrs but even it will get some more TLC now.
It would have been so much easier if the trees I bought were delivered as ordered; dwarf varieties! Only the Cherry & French apple were. Of course you buy in good faith & don't know for years & then have no evidence of the order. I am planning on getting my plot ones professionally trimmed this year as have trees at home for them to tidy/remove as well, as the build took a lot of garden space I want back.

Home. Tired. Did OK and the rain held off mostly. Phew. Back at Chesham on Saturday then local girls’ school Christmas fair on Sunday. The garden will have to wait a bit longer for some attention.
How easy are laurel roots to remove? My neighbour wants our boundary hedge removed, as do I but can t be bothered, as they are over 30 years old and monstrous. They are also a haven for the birds, but I can’t grow anything in my veg patch as the roots take all the moisture and nutrients. It’s our boundary, but he is very impatient (hasn’t even moved in yet, still getting extension etc done)

It’s still messing about this morning Clive…..
Might not eat as many Carrots this year now….suppose it’s down to the shortage of straw about this year….well fodder in general, think things might get really bad, if we get a long, hard Winter.

maybe an idea if it would allow to get a few more jobs done before the rain....
I was only getting access to an odd page first thing this morning then it went to internal server error message.
Very pleased to see that that it had come back just before I set off to work.

Certainly noticed the drop in temp today when I went down, & it was 8C in the tunnel this morning, but I didn't check the outside one. Fortunately all my jobs were in the tunnel. All the Dahlia's were nipped by a light frost but other than that nothing obvious. Managed to get the sweet potatoes all harvested which was my objective, & their bed weeded & fed & tucked down.
Very, very impressed with the Sweet Potato harvest, lot's of whoopers in the mix, but they did have more warm time this year. It will take quite a few journeys down to get them all home. The pic is just the first row's harvest.

Hurrah, back on border work this morning, as it was a dry start.....then it rained at lunchtime...very wet and cold rain.
Just a light cover of ice on the windscreen this morning...
Rain overnight and showery tomorrow very cold icy showery, it suggests...and a booked visit to the dentist as well.

A fine harvest Westi, you should indeed be impressed.
A real sharp frost in the early hours….blackened all the Dahlias and nipped at loads of the soft new growth on the Herbaceous plants, so although it was very nippy on the fingers at 7.30 am, started cutting back some of the big borders.

Very, very nippy down here this morning with the odd little shower thrown in for fun. It was to be shopping day but I gave that a miss & tomorrow is much the same but a bit colder so think I will remain hibernating & being creative with the fridge/freezer contents for meals.
Thursday was the best day & still is for sun shine, but Friday is way warmer so I will wait until then to go down now. I can cut down the asparagus while waiting for it to warm, but it should thaw quite quickly as supposed to be 5 min & 7 max....no minuses!

We had heavy snow this morning…..stopped any type of outdoor gardening.
Did go and repair someones guttering as a favour….but left my fingers feeling a bit nippy!
