All you celeriac growers - do you sow it thinly in trays and then transplant into individual modules, or just put a couple of seeds in each module and allow them to grow there until they're large enough to plant out?

I'm wonder which method will ensure bigger bulbs, or isn't there much difference in getting them off to a good start?

I sow in trays and pot on, mainly for convenience. You'll get big bulbs by taking off the lower leaves 2 or 3 times a year from July through till October/November.

Hi Primrose,
I always sow into trays and then transplant, make sure they don't get checked and sometimes they seem to take an age to germinate. To get big bulbs you need to keep them well watered. THey also seem to need a long growing season which can be difficult when they need to be kept under cover initially.

I sow them into one small pot and then prick the seedlings out singly into roottrainers (the low ones, not the tall ones) when they have their first pair of true leaves. They can then grow on for a fair long time before they need to be planted outside.

Once they're out the trick is lot's of water, and as Mike says, you must remove those early leaves.

GQT attacked this last week and the general view was growing method and water, otherwise you get golf balls!
