Well, today is SATURNALIA, the real celebration of the darkest days, when we should all go crazy. Forget this new-fangled Christmas nonsense and have a great time.

Monika, re religion, Snap! But Alan, re Saturnalia, well, that's really what the wine and the Hogmanay Reeling is all about. Celebrating the turning of the year and the shortening nights. I feel that if only we could get back to what the midwinter festival was really about, then the commercialism wouldn't seem quite as vulgar and the hypocrisy - well, there wouldn't really be any.
But I'm not a fan of noise and rowdiness and have not been for as long as I can remember, so I empathise with those who like the stillness of the nights in winter. Mind you, this doesn't come only at night or in winter. I remember getting up on a Sunday morning to walk the length of Trumpington Street in Cambridge to have breakfast in college. On numerous occasions I walked the whole distance in the middle of te road without having to get onto the pavement once. I wonder if I could do that today.

Dear Mike, you could if you visited Milton Bryan on a Sunday morning.
But there again, you might bump into the village idiot, now there's a scary thought for a chilly, snow covered Thursday evening.

Well, I'm sorry that some of you don't enjoy Christmas, I love it and always have. It was always a great time at places where I used to work with celebrations in the local Pubs. In those days wherever I was working I always came home for Christmas, now I just stay at home and let everyone come to me. My daughter and granchildren will be coming this Saturday all the way from Leicester, my youngest son will be arriving on Christmas Eve, he's been working at Hartlepool and my oldest son and girlfriend who live nearby will spend Christmas day with us. Well at least I hope he will since he has been fattening the turkey for months now.
I've already attended an enjoyable carol service and try (but not always succeed) to live up to the Christmas message of peace and goodwill to all men.
May I wish all forum members (believers or not) a very happy Christmas and a merry new year
Best wishes
Barney

Thank you for this very uplifting reminder. Apart from Christmas, this really is the most miserable and dreariest part of the year and I always feel my spirits start to rise a little once the shortest day is behind us. I can just about live with them if we have sunshine and a clear blue sky, but give me a grey sky with low cloud cover and I just can't energise myself at all.

Light till 16.35 tonight
on the subject of keeping up with the neighbours - my total 'Christmas' decorations this year consisted of a single wreath outside my front door made entirely with greenery from my garden. I'm trying to cope with my husband's total lack of understanding as to why I want a (tiny, 3 poles) allotment in addition to our back garden, though I suspect his latest spurt of bad temper on the subject was due to his rather rashly trying to get the car as close to the plot as possible and nearly getting stuck in the mud - he chose to drop some stuff off for the plot that way rather than park on the hard standing and let me barrow it down <g>. I got my red onion seeds in yesterday and will add some tomato seeds in the heated propagator shortly - Happy New Year everyone

Dear Mike,
it is still possible to walk down the middle of trumpington street, especially last Friday (17th) when it was under 3-4 inches of snow, but as addenbrooks hostpital has moved to the outskirts of town it might not be all that wise...
Christmas day I thought I had gone deaf as there was so little traffic about. Sadly it is back to it's usual nose to tail traffic jam of desparate shoppers today (27th).
Regards Sally Wright.
