RED SPIDER MITE IN THE GREENHOUSE.

Can't identify that mould? Got a great tip for keeping slugs at bay? Suggestions for organic weed control? Post them here...

Can anyone advise me on how to eradicate these horrible little pests please? For the last two seasons, my cucumbers became thoroughly infested by them. The first year, I didn't recognise the symptoms early enough...yellowing of leaves followed by bronzing then the dreaded webs. By the time I realised what the problem was, it was too late and there wwere countless beasties. I thoroughly scrubbed the greenhouse with a Jeyes solution, even the canes :!: and used a sulphur candle too. Last year I did all the books advised to prevent it happening again and examined the plants minutely(with a magnifying glass!) but again I missed them. How I don't know as I was so vigilant! I sprayed with an insecticide which said it killed them---it didn't. :x Before long there were strings of them abseiling around. I finished up taking the plants out and burning them. I also had some in my second greenhouse on the peppers, which may have transferred on my clothing I suppose. I am about to clean the greenhouses again and have left it til now deliberately. Any suggestions and advice would be greatly appreciated as I don't want history repeating itself. Cheers Elaine

Mix a solution of Jeyes fluid and spray all over then with a fine spray mist daily or twice daily.they hate moist conditions but your toms and peppers
will love it .

Good Luck

I agree, keep the atmosphere inside moist, and you'll not have any problems with them. I always mist my greenhouse plants and can't remember ever having RSM in there. Good luck this year!

Provado does kill off RSM. I spray my P/Tunnels every month at first sign of attack. I also spray the leaves of cues every day with plain water.

Brilliant. Thanks for that folks. I'll go and get some Jeyes. I did mist the plants daily but the problem is, the greenhouses are on my allotment. As I work 6am to 2pm I can't get there early and it's 2.30pm at the earliest before I can do any misting. The greenhouse has adequate ventilation, two roof vents, one of which is temperature controlled and a side louvre also temp controlled. I know the little beasties love hot and dry conditions. If I scrub all the nooks and crannies with Jeyes now, do you reckon that should sort any over wintered mites? Has anyone tried the predatory mites which are advertised, which gobble the reds up? I'm almost dreading this season!!!!  Cheers, Elaine

ours only gets misted once, sometimes twice a week, as we all work full time too. So far this has been enough (17 years)! Good luck this season.

I have used the predatory mite 'Phytoseiulis persimilis' (I think  ) to great effect. They are best used as a preventative though and it is recommended to do a release about once a month and as such can get very expensive.
To use as a curative you really do need to spot the problem very early on, at the first sign of attack, otherwise they will take a while to get on top of an established attack.
One word of advice if you do plan to try them. Get a magnifying glass! At first glance they can look very similar to the RSM themselves, so it is worth having a good look at them before release, they do move a lot faster though.
