I have 4 chicks hatched by a broody hen. Does anyone have any ideas how I can tell what sex they are??? They are approx 4 weeks now. 2 are Welsummers the other 2 I just do not know. There is one which was yellow to start with now is getting brown feathers (but this one has its crown comming).

Please does anyone know how I can tell or do I just sit it out and wait till they are fully grown??

Hello PaV
There is some stuff that might be useful to you on the Practical Poultry forum

http://kelseyinfo.co.uk/yabb/YaBB.pl?num=1114254926

about your Welsumer chicks. They do show some sex differences. As far as the other chicks go I think you'll just have to wait as Alan says. From about 12-14 weeks the difference usually begin to show between males and females. I must say I do like the Welsummer - the plumage is superb isn't it (and the brown eggs).

Thank you very much for your replies, I have been on the link and it is very helpfull.

The chicks are the 1st Wellsummers we have had, we have a Orpington and a Speckledy at the moment, but I have heard good reports they say that they are very docile.

How old do they start to crow, we have one that is starting to get a comb and likes to purch high on a plant pot. It is also the more aggressive one so I think it could be a male.

Hi PaV

Seems like it's a cockerel :!:

They start to (try to) crow at about 12-14 weeks. The first sound is rather like a strangled :?: well, something.
