I guess we've all been gasping at the photo of the black hole, 55million light years away. But what I want to know is how do we know that it's still there? It could have ceased to exist 54 million years ago!

Good question. And if it's not there, where has it gone to. And what's on the other side?? (my head hurts just trying to imagine).

I think it's difficult to get our heads round some of these issues. I always wonder how the scientists ever manage to understand enough about it to be able to lecture on it. I smiled are John's comment that it could have ceased to exist many years ago. As I imagine, could many of the stars we currently see which are thousands of light years away.

Shame Steven Hawkins didn't live long enough to see his ginormous mathematical equations proved to be absolutely right. he may even have been able to answer John's question.
