Black Hole

I guess we've all been gasping at the photo of the black hole, 55million light years away. But what I want to know is how do we know that it's still there? It could have ceased to exist 54 million years ago!

I think it's difficult to get our heads round some of these issues. I always wonder how the scientists ever manage to understand enough about it to be able to lecture on it. I smiled are John's comment that it could have ceased to exist many years ago. As I imagine, could many of the stars we currently see which are thousands of light years away.
