Early Summer Bits and Bobs.

Red hot here today, we have rain forecast for tomorrow which is about right as I am out fishing on the mersey till late evening its a hard life

Look at my cabbages, bursting out of their enclosure. I didn't expect them to grow this fast and you can't give away this time of year. I did put them close together because I had read somewhere that you get more outer leaves but this is a surprise, I doubt they are going to make any hearts at all.

Oh-well, I learnt a little more and another surprise was that the ground they are growing in isn't what I would call nice soil, I mixed sand in and a handful of chicken poo every metre.

Clear skies until 10:00 hrs, rain by 13:00 hrs at Pinnar. Well....... rain with sunshine for the remaining day.

Please let me know how wrong I got it and can I send you some cabbage ?

We used to have sausage-meat wrapped in cabbage leaves but you can't buy good-clean large cabbage leaves so that was my personal remit. I'm now very happy that I can grow large-clean leaves.

Tasty, par-boiled then sauteed with olive oil, chilli and a grating of cheese with some nice garlic.

being veggie, my husband was never fond of vegetables (I think his parents used to overcook everything). On Sunday he said how delicious the cabbage was (homegrown) shredded and stir-fried with garlic (last year's Picardy Wight is still viable thank goodness) a little salt and lots of black pepper. I nearly fainted with shock!

The poppies are lovely Geoff, I grew some chosen by Mo. They open then fall apart within a day. Along with the Cosmos they were a Sara Raven marketed seed.

Rp's Seems like you treat your cabbage in a similar way to me, some cabbage seems to respond to being fried almost crispy at the edges but I don't remember the type. Certainly not the one I'm currently growing.

Some flowers for you, I'm going to use one bed for flowers every year and I wish I could have added a sound track to the photo. The noise of the insects is very rewarding.

Lovely poppies. Geoff! I decided earlier this year to use one long border on the allotment for flowers only (it's the bit with the worst soil), so this spring I random sowed lots of annuals as well as red clover and phacelia. They are all coming into flower now and are awash with insects - just what I wanted. When they have died down in autumn, I shall just dig it all in and hope they have shed their seeds for a display next year.

Lovely flower pics everyone! I have just renovated my main flower bed at home, so it is looking a wee bit sparse! I have chosen perennials loved by bees, so here's hoping

Some excellent flowers Ricard with an h. I do like seeing pictures of gardens and the like. I may post some pictures of my weeds they all seem to be doing very well.
