I have 4 crowns of Early Champagne rhubarb - this is their 4th year after planting. This year as well as the normal stalks, they have all put up thick stems with seed heads - is this normal? Do i break them off or leave them?
Please can anyone advise?

Hello Guest
We have had the same problem this year and just pull them out. We have three plants of three different varieties - Timperley Early and two un-named varieties. Both the un-named varieties are throwing up seed heads at a pace. One of these is from crowns we split and transplanted in Autumn 04 and the other is from plants that are very well established - years. The Timperley Early is not producing any seed heads. These were planted from pots obtained from a nursery.
I don't know that I would call it 'normal' but it does happen. I put it down to the vagaries of the season, particularly as last year a seed head was a rare sight across all our rhubarb. A recent thread on this will give you a little more info too viewtopic.php?t=1129
