Spot checks on heavy goods vehicles on the A55 in north Wales found the majority breaking the law, say police.

A total of 35 out of 43 HGVs (80%) were found in breach of a range of laws from overloaded and defective vehicles to a driver without a valid licence.

That is a truly shocking statistic Alan. I am glad that the police were seizing uninsured vehicles. Hopefully that will prove a lesson to those who flout the law and put us all at risk. I wonder how many of these were European drivers who think they can get away with ignoring the law over here.

As a fairly regular user of motorways in our part of the world we sometimes see appalling driving by HGVs, especially tailgating. . As a matter of principle I always report them when I can get their registration number. I was once tailgated by such a vehicle for many miles to the point where I almost lost control of my car because I was so terrified I was going to be rammed. These people are a menace on the roads and if they lose their licences and their ability to earn a living, they only have themselves to blame!

Very small number checked considering how busy that road is so presumably selected as looking dodgy. Still a frightening result though.

The vast majority of vehicles above 7.5 tonne are speed limited to 56 mph.
If you are being "tailgated" I can only ask why you are driving so slowly on a motorway ?

WHR, I'm sure that's the case with some companies, but empirical evidence on M11 makes me doubt that, especially with non-UK registered vehicles.
