This seems to be an Americanism that has crept in. I noticed they used similar terminology in the short lived A1 racing.

Oh, I see. It's a brand name. Well fancy that.

There's a school down here in the south that won't let the kids off to watch it even though it is passing really close to them - says they can watch it on TV as wouldn't get to see it anyway as the crowds would be too large.

A real once in a lifetime experience being taken away from them - might not get to see the flame but the atmosphere will be remembered I would think. (And the opportunity to tell their kids they were there is better than 'I saw that on the TV').

That is really sad. Our local Council allocated space specifically for each school in attendance, at various points along the route, so that the children could see the flame as it passed and that was in the local towns as well as the villages.

Our first floor office balcony is being turned over to social services disabled clients to allow them a better view.

Here we have a Samsung executive carrying the torch past our rugby, squash, running and (one of several) football clubs, after starting from our fire & ambulance station a few yards up the road, not that anyone associated to any of those organisations had nominated any local; worthies, heros, sportsmen or sportswomen. Oh they had? Never mind.

The only localish person to take part and that was several towns up towards Cambridge, was Jamie Oliver.

Cynical?

Me?

Never.

Well I did go and watch. :D
