Algon is very good, I did my greenhouse inside and out with it a couple of days ago - and can hardly use my arms today with all the reaching. I applied it with a window sponge on a pole and used the squeegee side to scrape it off after a minute or two.

I make sure I disconnect the drain pipes from the roof to my water butt while I'm doing it so as not to pollute the water - I don't know if it would harm plants but I don't give it a chance. I hosed down the outside of the greenhouse after applying it to make sure before reconnecting the pipes.

Dear Plumpudding, am i wrong in thinking that you can just spray Algon on and let nature do the rest?

Hope your arms soon loosen up Plumpudding.

Hi O H,
You can use a spray, but I didn't fancy taking a chance on breathing the stuff. They say to apply it and to wait a couple of minutes for it to loosen the moss, algae etc, and to then clean it off before it dries. It works very well and lasts all winter. I used it last year and again in spring and there is less forming each time I use it, so the job is getting quicker.

My greenhouse is 25 ft x 14 ft and 11 ft 6 in high, so it is quite a task.

I used Algon too ( thanks to recommendations from this forum) it does work very well - but am I a bit of a cynic .. the ingredients say contains Acetic Acid .. well it smells remarkably like plain vinegar to me !!! With the makers very coy about what else on the contents list ..... not complaining as it does work - but vinegar is quite a lot cheaper !!!!!!

I noticed a distinct vinegar smell too, but it also seems to have some detergent in it. I tried making my own to kill the moss on the path to test this out, but it wasn't very successful. The fact that it hardly stopped raining long enough for anything to dry out probably had a bearing. I have noticed that the couple of weeks we've had without rain accompanied with keen frosts have allowed the paths to dry out nicely for the first time in months and the moss is now dying off.

Still the Algon works wonders on the greenhouse and goes a very long way.

Algon smells of vinegar because acetic acid is the compound that makes vinegar smell the way it does! As it's a corrosive, it's also the reason that vinegar is such a good cleaning product.

Having used Jeyes Fluid solution and elbow grease for the last few years, this year I sprayed a hot Jeyes solution on then used a power wash, but made sure that the spray was kept at an angle to the glass. It did a great job even removing the muck from where the glass overlapped.

Regards, Gerry.
