Leek Marking

In recent years I have noticed a lot of show leeks have a shadowy mark on the barrel and always on the opposite side to the button. When a flag is stripped an orangey/rusty coloured mark runs down the inside of the stripped flag.The fault then appears on the other side of the leek. Numerous flags have to be stripped before fault disappears. This year I have noticed it on small eating leeks. It has nothing to do with overhead watering as leeks grown under cover are also affected.Any ideas anyone?
