Unknown weed root

Can't identify that mould? Got a great tip for keeping slugs at bay? Suggestions for organic weed control? Post them here...

Hi all

It's been a while, but I have moved house! The new house has an existing veg plot, about the size of a full allotment. It is a bit neglected and I have discovered a network of white roots in some of the beds. It is fleshy and white, like bindweed, but one or two bits seem to be attached to a wandering grass which has very stringy above ground bits. It is like couch grass but I don't think I've seen couch with such thick roots, or with the stringy above ground stems.

Any ideas what it may be? Soil is a clay/silt loam.

In my areas mown from field I get patches of a coarse tussocky grass a bit like a small pampas that has thick roots, I don't know its name for you to look it up. I often find cock chafers in it if I dig it up.
