Dear OH,

I am glad to read that OC is well, but also saddened to read about the unexpected death in the village. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Anyone else getting the giant spiders indoors, that always appear at this time of the year.

Just caught a real wopper in the shower room in the east wing. :)

Good morning OH,

You're not the only one. There was a big fat one in our bathroom a few days ago. I managed to fill the small hole that he was hiding in.
Perhaps he moved up to Bedfordshire :)

There are a lot of those gangly cellar spiders in the corners as well at the moment.

Aren't the long legged small bodied ones called Harvestmen?

Hi Peter,

There are some called that, but not these.
These are long bodied cellar spiders. Sometimes called daddy long legs spiders. They hang upside down in webs and are quite often seen moving around at night. Quite common in the south of England apparently.

Just reading about spiders makes me go cribbly all over - can't stand them.

I don't mind mice, frogs, toads, snakes, wasps etc. There is a reason: when I was about 7, I was playing outside with a neighbour's lad (on a bombsite, actually), building "houses" with the rubble, when he said, "Do you want a little horse in your house?" Thinking he had found a toy horse, I eagerly put my hand out on which he placed a huge, live spider! I screamed and ran and could still feel the spiders legs on my hand for hours afterwards. And that terror is still with me! The little lad obviously meant no harm.

I don't kill spiders when they find their way into the house (like at this time of the year). I get the outside door open, get a glass and a sheet of card, place the glass over the spider, slide the card between the floor/wall/ceiling and the glass containing the spider and take them both outside to shake the spider out. Hopefully, it doesn't come back into the house!

Hi Monika,

It's funny how childhood experiences stay with you for the rest of your life isn't it.
I managed to get one of those little black slugs in my mouth when I was quite young, and ever since then slugs always make me shudder.
