standard apples on M25 rootstocks

Postby sally wright » Tue Dec 28, 2010 11:28 pm

Dear All,
I am looking for suppliers of apples for an oldfashioned orchard and I am looking for suppliers of traditional standard trees. I have R V Roger at Pickering so far and I need a few more for comparison. The closer to Cambridge the better though.
Regards Sally Wright.

Keepers Isle of Wight, hence mail order, bit very very big range.

There seem to be over seventy m25 maiden varieties, somewhat fewer 2 year old standards.

Hi Sally,
If you were looking for Cider Apple Trees, Bulmers ran a scheme in this area not only for commercial growers but that was to try and bring more diversity into the Cider range and the trees were kind-of heritage trees.

I'd try Deacons too on the Isle of Wight, their range is amazing and they have a huge choice of all sizes, shapes and root stocks. Also their catalogue is a mine of information on new and old varieties and their ripening times and keeping qualities.

Dear Johnboy,
I don't need cider apples just ordinary eaters/cookers to replace an old avenue that was planted in 1949. Besides; the students, tourists, squirrels, birds and wasps usually get most of them anyway.

If you're up to doing your own grafting then get some rootstock and pop down the old A11 to Sawbridgeworth and visit the historic Rivers Nursery Orchard for some grafting materials. :)

Dear Peter,
no no no no!!!! I value my fingers; rather attached to them y'know. You could always tell when the NCH hort were doing grafting at college. Somebody always ended up with a rather flamboyant bandage and had to get another student to feed them their food for about a week.
