I seem to recall not that long ago various people (including HDRA ?) withdrawing advice about using old carpret for covering compost heaps, clearing ground, etc. Not because of the odd synthetic fibre, but because of the variety of other stuff in/on them, ranging from glues, fire retardants, insecticides either applied to them or as woodworm treatment to the boards they are on, and all the household chemicals for which carpets form a sort of "sink". Surely that applies to the vaccum cleaner fluff too. Whilst I'm not completely convinced that it is enough of a risk to worry about, I am not that desperate for composting materials or mulch.
