You could always ask your local Kwik Fit, they have a tyre collection every couple of days.

our local ats will take them but charge a quid or so each. you could always put one in your black bag amongst the household waste  .. one mans waste is anothers raw materials, how about a stack of tyres to grow potatoes? or line with polthene to make a water container, etc, we could start a thread a thousand and one uses of an old car tyre?

My local council recycling centre takes car tyres, you have to deliver them yourself though.I am very impressed with the service,it will take anything you can deliver.

You could always drop them off round Bob Flowerdew's, i've heard he's a bit of a magpie for rubbish.

Kind regards Old Herbaceous.

I saw a thing in a gardening magazine and they painted the tyres with bright, Dulux paint (apparently the best for the job) stacked them up and used them as a large planter. Surprisingly, it looked rather good.

Just an idea.....

Idea with these is to use them as small raised beds.
Either sigle or stacked.
To stack you'll need a drill and some nuts/bolts, three per layer probably. Drill three holes rond the first tyre, then through the holes use a wax crayon to mark the second tyre, drill its holes and bolt them together.
Hey presto a strawberry planter that can ;
self warm - black rubber in sunshine,
reserve water - the curve at the side will holed some excess from overwatering for drier days.
portable - lever onto side and roll.
hold up banks - earth ones before the sherriffs ask.

:D

You cannot dispose of Tyres in most Districts as it is part of the nonsensicle Government ruling that the disposal should be carried out by the person selling the new tyre. I had some new tyres last year and the dealer said that if I was not prepared to pay £1 per tyre then I would have to dispose of them
myself. I use them to hold polythene down but other people may simply not pay the £1 and deposit them on the roadside and in this area there is direct evidence of this.
The Tyre Dealer told me that he puts them into a portable container which costs him £2000.00 a container and the cost will increase shortly.
BTW if I want to dispose of Asbestos I have not only a 250 miles round trip it costs many many pounds per load. It is no longer accepted by the LA as their responsibility it is now on the shoulders of the disposer.

It's so obvious to us but not to the councils,if you don't make it easy and accessible then people will fly-tip! I have asbestos guttering round my house and I'm not even going to think of changing it because I know I'll be ripped off on disposal charges.

Hi Carole,
What is even more stupid is that it is an offence to bury it on your own plot. So its alright to decay whilst its on your property and the rainwater carrying decaying particles run into a soakaway which is doing exactly the same as burying would do. The only difference is that Asbestos being a natural product if buried will not decay at anywhere the rate as it does exposed to the elements as your guttering. We have to take it to the other side of Cardiff from Nth Hereforshire a goodly trot. Same goes for fridges and freezers in this area they still have not got the facilities to nullify them so they all have to be transported goodness knows how many miles using fossil fuel both ways and if everybody in the country has to run about like headless chickens using fossil fuel probably more damage is done to the planet than is you just let the b---dy stuff out into the atmosphere in the first place.
I have had a comunication from the Council this morning to say that they are considering a box scheme of waste collection listing some do's and dont's. They will not collect plastic milk bottles we must take then to one of the 4 appointed sites and the nearest is 12 miles away and if they think I am going to travel 24 miles round trip even once they are mistaken. Sometimes I do not go anywhere near any of their collection points for about 3 months. We have a facility in the village but they are not to be put there because they do not have the means to collect it. B---dy LA's don't they just love them!!
Sorry. Rant over.

As of this month, old tyres can no longer be disposed of in landfill. Whilst this is great for encouraging industry to find better ways of recycling, I fear it will also increase the occurrence of tyres being dumped by the roadside, in hedges, on allotments, in gardens, etc, etc, etc.

The ideas for re-use as planters and similar applications are great but sadly limited (about 46 million tyres were disposed of in the UK in 2003) and bluenose's problem is likely to become an all too familiar one.
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.
