Out with the dog looking at newly ploughed/planted fields and wondered how they get away without watering newly planted seeds/plants.

Seems the experts say give your new seeds/plants a good watering when first planted.

When planting last week I noticed tops of the beds are dry but further done very damp so perhaps I do not need to water them in?

Colin.
You are in the same position as me,beds dry on top damp underneath.I've chosen not to water just yet whilst hard night frosts are still forecast.
