My weather app is predicting -7°C at 2am tonight with a "RealFeel" of -10°C.

Altnaharra in northern Scotland dropped to -17.1°C at 6am today , coldest UK temperature since 26th December 2010.

Well we never got the -6C but cold enough! Unfortunately at work today & the rest of the week - or fortunately; as can't be tempted by the bad ideas to 'just check the plot' & it is warm & cosy in the office.

Out for a walk today and it was so cold, although only around 0 to -1 or 2c, but the cold breeze on your face. Brrr, I experienced that brain freeze you get from eating a very cold ice cream too quick. Bring on the next weather phase, a bit of 'dreich' as the Scots say.

Same here, not rising above freezing all day today, it seems. The last three days the cold wind was alleviated by brilliant sunshine, but that is missing today, so it's jolly cold. We have now had 7 consecutive nights with night frost down to -5C at times. Well, it will have killed a few bugs at least and milder weather is on the way!

A real bonus for me is, where I got late Winter digging, the rain didn't flatten it but, the frost will now crumble it beautifuly..

All the plants look like they will never recover, where the bitter wind has made them wilt but, with a little warth they will be nice and perky again... next week looks quite Spring like, temperature wise...the Blackbirds will resume nest building again.

The soil surface here is dry and flaked this morning...but still cast iron hard underneath.

It didn't half blow around midnight, wild and howling.!

Down the garden here you can smell the soil off the back field in the air.....

OH, when we had the bright sunshine the last few days, I went round the garden and watered, yes, WATERED, all the winter pansies, dianthus, wallflowers etc, because I once read that during heavy frost with following sunlight, the plants actually die of drought because they cannot take up moisture from the frozen ground. So I thought at least if their leaves are wet and/or covered in frost, they may survive. Time will tell ....

Light snow here, however I had a real treat in the allotment shed.

Happy days - I've spent the morning pricking out my tomato seedlings that I sowed and kept in a heated propagator. As usual, there are far too many of them, but there are often casualties along the way to adulthood. Who am I kidding? There will still be too many of them!
It's our first day for some time when things are thawing out, but it's chucking it down, so we'll be going from frozen solid to mud pie again. Still, it should perk up the PSB which has been looking sorry for itself the past week or so, no doubt because it knows I want to eat it!
I may venture out for a peek into the greenhouses later and see how quickly the slugs are chomping my lettuces. I bought some organic slug pellets a while back after they scoffed anything young, green and tender that emerged out of the soil in there, but they just seem to treat them as a starter course, gobbling the pellets and moving onto the plants. Grrr.
