And why do local planning authorities still allow homes to be built on flood plains? I know houses are in short supply but surely at least they could be built on stilts if appropriate structures could be approved ?

At the entrance to my local supermarket is a stand holding free fruit for youngsters, the amount of mums who do not take advantage of free fruit for their children is sad.

I suspect it's less about what the children don't like and more about the mums having too much pride and not wanting others to think they can't afford to pay for their fruit because they're too hard up. But maybe its also because the concept isn't being correctly marketed.

I was thinking this morning how much we take life's current advantages for granted with central heating.
It's getting to the time of year where we would otherwise be waking up to frost glazed window and frozen pipes In our toilets and bathrooms. And gardeners didn't have poly tunnels in those days which would have enabled them to protect their most tender plants, or even be able to continue growing a few modest crops during the winter months.
