My first leek has just gone to seed. Last year they had nearly all seeded early and surcombed to either rust or insects which turned the stems to mush so I'm hoping this winter I may get a decent crop.

I pulled one that had gone to seed last week, I had a hard time trying to get Leek's to germinate my favorite Bulgarian giant was a disaster not one from 96 planted , a week ago I ordered some more seeds it was only when I went down the plot and got the old seeds out to discard I seen the label " use before 2002 " funny thing is I only bought them around three years ago

Rather less picturesque is the pile of two trailer-loads of manure I had delivered!

Stephen, a big manure heap like that is a thing of beauty in my eyes, especially when it's YOUR manure heap !!

We were visiting Cliveden House this afternoon and spotted this rather beautiful display of nerines still in full flower despite some recent autumn frosts. Annoyingly I planted some nerine bulbs in one of my borders this spring and not a single one has flowered this autumn. Don't know what I've done wrong.

Hi Primrose
Perhaps you planted your bulbs upside down!

Nerines can take some years to settle in and start to flower.

Thanks for this info Sally. I will perhaps have to be patient whilst always remembering the advice I once read that if you plant a walnut tree, it's the next generation who benefits !

You don't have to wait so long for the nuts Primrose, my 8 year wallnut tree had 7lbs of nuts this year. I think the next generation wait is if you're going to chop it down for its wood.

Well that's somewhat reassuring although always sad if a fruit producing tree is chopped down merely for firewood although I imagine being felled by storms, disease or other factors sometimes necessitate this. Just wish I had the garden space to plant a few fruit or nut producing trees.

With quite a small garden the choice here always practically had to be between trees and lots of shade or an open space for growing vegetables.

I think they are used for making the wooden bits on guns (very technical) and need to be at least 80 years old and fetch a very good price for furniture making etc too. Definitely not for firewood.

Primrose, I am delighted but it will take a while to shift it all.
