The two seem to be inextricably linked.
Just seen a popular and well tended site as my Virgin Train from Euston was zipping north near Leighton Buzzard.

Every train line I visit for the first time I see allotments.

Long may the connection continue! I think a lot of people in the past whose gardens backed onto railway lines have used the embankments behind their gardens as unofficial allotments too

Peter, when the days of the big name rail companies existed, before British Rail, many allotments were provided for staff by the side or close to railway cottages or even by platforms as exemplified at Beamish Museum

Sadly if you had those kind of growing facilities on platforms these days, everything would be stolen overnight when it was at ripening stage !

I'm not surprised it was well tended, since it was close to me....

All it takes sometimes is a trigger for things to fall into place.

Seeing OH's comment did just that for me, I knew I had a picture somewhere of him on his plot >>>> found it, taken whilst waiting for a train.
