Still trying to snow here, the winds not so bad and it is a bit warmer, it was zero yesterday when we popped into town for the first time in a week.

All thawed down here, rained last night but remained cloudy so didn't ice over again. Lottie was thawed out as well & pretty intact so caught up with the digging, sun shone most of the time with just the odd very light & short shower.

We checked up on the allotment this morning: the steep hollow path between a dry stone wall and a bank is completely filled with a giant snow drift, about 5 feet deep. Luckily, it had blown the snow off the flat adjoining area so we could walk on there and scramble down the bank at the end.
On the allotment: no rabbit tracks (phew), several pheasant tracks and the 12 foot long sweet pea/runner bean frame blown over. Lots of rabbit tracks on other allotments.

Once the perma frost has thawed I might try digging out a wildlife pond, getting a liner for my birthday present.

A pond is always a nice feature to have. Ours is the smallest one possible but the frogs and newts still mysteriously appear from nowhere every spring and give me a lot of pleasure. I never even knew I had newts in our garden until we got the pond so you can imagine my delight when I found the first one In it within days of it being installed
Get digging soon !

Our filter has succumbed to the frost today it's leaking everywhere more money to pay out, tigerburnie before you put your liner in line the hole with something just in case there are any sharp stones ,I used fibreglass matting it was three inches thick but it's easy to pull apart I got three out of each length

The liner I'm looking at comes with a free backing layer, but I also have some old carpet and underlay to use up as well.

Yes, I used an old carpet on top of a layer of sand with a heavy duty butyl liner as it was a large pond and it's still going strong probably 30 years later. I've said before that it turned out three times what I had marked out as my son got a bit carried away using a mini digger!

I've not turned the pump on for a while now as there aren't any fish left but it usually has 80 plus frogs, newts and damsel and dragon flies plus all the other water creatures. It has a shallow end of pebbles so things can go for a drink without falling in. Not sure what will have happened to the frogs this year as it's been frozen solid for a week just when they were coming out of hibernation.
