Beer traps killing my beetles

I found trapping slugs in beer traps worked last year but how do you stop beetles drowning in them too please ?

Position the entry hole about 1/2" above soil level,Happymouse,then the slugs will still go 'up and over' but the bettles will bang their heads on the side and wander off with mild concussion!

Hi,
I've found that if you leave a stick poking out of the trap the beetles are agile enough to climb up it to escape, but for some reason the slugs don't.
