I haven't grown sprouts before and after a bumper crop the plants have started to bolt.but lower down the sprouts are still coming can i chop the tops off and will the sprouts below mature anymore?

PS the best of two varieties was peer gynt which did not succumb to the white fly that the other (unknown variety) did suffer from.

Hi Compo

Cut off the tops of the plant and you can steam them like spinach. Bit of butter and pepper, yummy.

You can keep pulling the sprouts off but take care, the quality will probably start to go downhill.

For a good sprout try growing Red Delicious or Rubines. These are both red varieties and are really nice. They taste sweeter than green ones and are very tasty. I'm growing more red ones this year simply because we prefer them. They also keep their colour on cooking too.

Hi Compo,

harvest what you can as now the weather is warming up they will want to go to seed. Cutting the tops off will halt it but as Lizzie says the quality will not be great if you leave them much longer. Its the end of their season really. If you harvest the lot and freeze them you will salvage whats left and free up the ground for your next crop.

lower sprouts may well shoot out, just let them develope a few leaves then pick the shoots and cook them.
