Celery

I have grown self blanching celery for the first time this year. My problem is that they are not very big, they are starting going brown and speckly on the leaves but the worst problem is that they are going limp and useless after picking and bringing them home. I only live five minutes drive from my plot and I have had them being useless in that short time. What am I doing wrong. I must say that the stalks are only thin.
