Hi all, earlier in the year for the first time i planted 20 asparagus roots most of them are up and growing well i was told they where 3 years old and can be harvested this coming spring this i did not believe but carried on regardless, today ive found a spear growing from the base of one of the plants , should i leave it as it is or should i cut it off i thought asparagus only sent spears up in spring

Most of my asparagus (12 yrs old), is up & full of foliage but I still find the occasional spear which I leave. They don't get as that big before autumn comes but I still think they help feed the crowns a bit for next season.

I cheated with mine & took a few to taste in the 2nd year but not too many, (took loads of self control)!
