Red Onions

I like eating raw red onion rings in salads but when I grew the over-wintering supposedly red onion Electric last year, they looked deep red from the outside but were completely white inside. Was it my cultivation or is there a red onion variety which is actually red (or, at least, has red-edged rings) inside?

Hi Monika!

I grew electric as well and although not totally white inside would have to say very pale pink in some of the rings but not red except for the very outer layers. (Nothing like store bought anyway), but still tasty but a wee bit stronger in taste.

I grew Red Pearl and they are the best Red Onions I have ever grown, not massive, but nice bulbs that seem to be keeping quite well too.

Doesn't sound like they fulfil Monika's wish for red flesh.

These may be a little more red inside, though I haven't grown them.

I grow Red Baron from seed in clumps just like my white onions, they have some colour in the rings but are a bit variable in performance.

Thank you. I have also just found that Franchi Seeds, available at RHS Harlow Carr, do a red long onion seed, Lunga di Firenze, so I might try those next year because Rossa di Toscana, suggested by you, Geoff, doesn't seem to be available any more.
