Pruning Cordon Apples

My cordons have always been a bit untidy - I'm an untidy gardener - so they haven't really been shaped very well. Although the advice for summer pruning is for late July/August the length and number of shoots are such that I am wondering if a prune now would be in order, possibly with another in August.
