Pruning Tayberries

I've cut the fruited wood off the tayberries but wondered whether to cut off or reduce the thinner side shoots from the new stems.
I don't want to encourage them to go bushy but would like a neater plant when I've tied the new canes/shoots in. The side shoots grew rather long and spindly last year. Any suggestions?

I seem to remember a post where Johnboy suggested pruning tayberries and blackberries alternate sides each year to keep the plant tidy i.e right hand side one year,left hand side the next and so on.Having just bought and planted a tayberry this year I will certainly follow this advice PP

Thanks Snooky. I've done that but the new canes have sent out quite a few spindly side shoots. I'm not sure whether to cut them off or just shorten them. I didn't notice them doing this last year but don't want to cut off fruiting shoots. The side shoots are already nearly two feet long but very thin. The main stems are nice and thick as usual.
I've looked it up on the RHS website but they don't mention side shoots.
