Nemo - I don't know the answer and wonder whether it's partly due to the size of the pepper seeds. I saved mine last year from an elongated Italian variety and sowed them all on the same day in mid February. My tallest pepper is now about a foot hight and developing its first flowers, the smallest one, although looking very healthy, is only about four inches high. All have had exactly the same compost and conditions.
thanks primrose for replying now i know i am not alone .i gave half my plants a liquid lime feed .i did this because you could have soil that has a lot of organic matter added to it but if the pH is to low the plants cannot absorb the nutrients this is what the tutor at the college said so i will let you know if it actually works
