onions from seed...

Need to know the best time to plant?

should I be sowing these now? my onions were terrible last year, I think all that rain didn't agree with them. I did manage to harvest a handful, but they didn't store well, and I threw most of them away.

I have some just coming through, but the packets say you can sow until the end of March.

I believe the exhibition onion growers traditionally sow on Boxing Day, but they want enormous onions!

I grow all my Onions from seed in almost exactly the same way as I do Shallots as described in this old thread viewtopic.php?f=3&t=7993&hilit=shallots+from+seed

The only real difference is that when I plant out the pots of seedlings they are 1' apart rather than 8". I grow a lot so they they take up quite a bit of space, usually 13 or 14 trays of Onions and 4 of Shallots. They go in a heated greenhouse, only 40-45ºF, and dear diary says I plan to sow them on 18th February. Arthur and Red Baron this year.
