Chicory failed, what can we do with it?

Postby Elmigo » Sat Nov 02, 2019 8:45 am

This year we tried making white chicory for the first time. It's a bit more complicated than regular veggies. Everything went great, untill the last and most difficult part. The roots are now put in moist sand/dirt in a dark room. The leaves come out and yes, they are indeed white/yellow as predicted. Except we have no real white chicory crops, just a couple of white leaves! Better luck next year. But what went wrong?

Elmigo. I don,t think you necessarily failed as a home grower. I,m sure yiur plants is still edible You probably just didn,t have the same completely dark geowing areas that the commercial growers have where everything is set up in large dark areas, rather like the commercial mushroom growers have.

This kind of chicory is pretty hard for an amateur grower to produce with a completely white head. I reckon yiu did well to get any sort of result at all!

Well, now that I think about it, perhaps the containers were a little too small to start with. I don't think commercial growers do anything an amateur can't do. Maybe it's just that they do it on a large scale. I placed them in the bathroom where the light turns on and off a couple times a day. I'll try again next year!
