Courgette seed failure, is it too late to start again

Planted 12 F1 courgette seeds on 13th May. First one germinated a week later, but the first was the last. 3rd June now and no sign of the other 11 germinating. Because one germinated I am happy with the compost and conditions for germination but I am not happy with the 11 which, on investigation, I see didn't even start to shoot.

Is it too late to plant more seeds? I have the packet which came with Kitchen Garden recently. I guess I might as well give it a try, eh. What do you think? Am I likely to get plants which will give us a crop?
Cheers.

Yes, give it a go. Certain of these seeds like beans and courgettes can still be sown in open ground In early June. I,d sow a couple in pots though to give them a better start.

I've only just sown my free yellow courgette seeds last week and they've all germinated. So I'm sure it's not too late. Everything is much happier with the warmth this year than last year when it turned cold just when I'd planted them all out. They stopped growing and sulked for weeks.

`12 courgette seeds. If they had all germinated the neighbours would realy be avoiding you.
One plant gives me more than I can use.
But by all means sowing more now will be OK.

Good luck.

I had the same problem with nought happening to the seeds, just sat in the soil looking just like they did when I put them in, no mould, no sogginess just like fresh out of the packet. Similar with the pumpkins & squashes but a re-sow got them going but they were sown later. Fortunately the lottie shop had courgette plants, not many as they had a similar problem, but I was lucky & managed to get 2.

Try again, not too late at all! Good Luck!

Thanks everyone. Today's the day. Interesting that Westi had the same problem with Courgette seeds. PlumPudding set the free seeds and they all germinated so the free with KG seeds are obviously viable.

Hello everyone, I have finally worked out how to take part in the forum again!

Re courgettes this year I was feeling chuffed that I had raised six plantlets so gave two away. Then when I was planting my four out it was too windy and the stems snapped on two of them! I am now back to four plants....,two green original ones and two yellow new ones from KG which have saved the day!

If any of you really end up with a glut of courgettes: slice and freeze them - very useful to add to soups and stews in winter.

Hi Villageduckpond!

My 2 from the Lottie shop are playing the game & thinking about flowering, but I tired one more time to get a yellow to go with these green ones & sowed from a free packet as well yesterday. It's late but will see, but if this weather holds all will be OK! I've been on the net looking at all sorts of recipes & don't think the neighbours will be getting as many as previous years as we are getting a drawer freezer for the garage (after electrics put in) & I quite liked the brownies & loaf recipes that needed grated courgettes which are totally freezable if you squeeze out the water!

Hi Westi
Good luck with your yellows. Mine are coming along quite well, so far! I have never grown them before and wonder if they have a different taste to the green ones. Do they?
I have now resorted to using grey water. Has anyone else? I see rain is on its way - pity it may be at the weekend for those who still work but we certainly need it round here!

Did you use to be a member of the forum and post before, Villageduckpond?

Evening VDP!

I think the yellows have a bit drier texture & more seeds, but tiny seeds & not an issue. They taste the same to me, but the others may have a better palate than me. What is nice though is the colours together when you serve them - screams Summer! The other great thing is a bit of research & there are so many more recipes out there than ever before to make with the inevitable glut! Who's have known you could freeze them & make Brownies & bread with them when we started growing them?

Delighted to say that 9 out of the 11 yellow courgette seeds provided FREE WITH KG MAGAZINE and set on 6th June have already germinated. Two of the green variety are now appearing - it's the 13th June today. Looks as if we will have enough courgette plants! Even if we only get a small, late crop it will be a bonus.

Thanks to everyone for encouraging me to not give up!
