Hi All, hoping you can help me (or a reader) identify a brassica-like plant that has popped up in his compost. Looks like a brassica and the leaves are cabbage like, but softer. Any ideas?

He'd like to know if it will produce a head and if he can eat it. Any thoughts gratefully received!

Steve, are you sure it's a brassica? The leaf looks too entire and smooth to me. Strangely, it looks very similar to one of my sweet peppers.

Stem is thick like a brassica but ribs on the leaf & general shape don't look like them so much. Wonder if it is one of the Chinese family of brassica's that is just very happy & larger than normal? Is it bought compost or his own, the clue could be in that - own compost what has he grown before, bought compost maybe send pic to them as they might have got a load from some farm with a specialism, council compost - you're on your own with that one! :) Anyone brave had a wee nibble? Taste will also help - not screaming poisonous looking to me so I'd likely have a wee nibble if it popped up on my plot, but.....?

Could it be of Asian descent, a form of brassica grown for use as greens, a type of Tatsoi

Pure guesswork on my part.

I think he'll have to continue nurturing it to see if it develops some kind of flower later in the season. Certainly an intriguing puzzle.

I think you are the closest to being right so far. Then it will turn out to be a genetically modified rapeseed or weed

Many thanks for your very helpful comments all. I think I'll offer Primrose's suggestion to grow it on and to see what the flower head looks like and also try to find out more about the source of the compost as Westi suggests.

Thanks again folks. If I find out what it is eventually I'll let you know!
