I have 4ft x 4ft x 18in raised bed, which I am going to fit a 4ft high poly tunnel.

Would I be able to use this as a cold frame?

Hi Colin, I don't see why not, providing you have the ability to open up (and close it) to get ventilation in and aclimitise your plants.

I suppose the other option would be to fit some Perspex or upcycle an old window to the top and fit some hinges. I've seen people convert their raised beds like this on the allotment, and they are probably about 18inches in depth. I think some have lined theirs to get some extra heat?

My cold frame came from the recycling centre - a hinged plastic thing, no base and a bargain £4!

Are you looking to use it to grow in over winter?

Thanks for advice Pawty.

Originally thinking of storing a couple geraniums that I have been given and maybe start off some sweet peas & others that I come across.

Would it make any differnec if there was 6 inchs of soil in the bottom?
