Does anybody else have one of these Hozelok automatic watering systems? What started off as a real convenience is turning into rather a pain. Every year we take it up because over one season the limescale in our water clogs up all the micro watering jets and they have to be removed and soaked in vinegar to unclog them. . When we put the hose back in situ, as we are currently doing, the black pipe is so rigid that all the jets seem to be in the wrong positiont and end up watering the lawn instead of plants in the borders. Whilst there is the facility to remove the jets, plug the holes with plastic studs and put new jets in a more convenient place, our hose is gradually becoming more and more studded.
If anybody else uses this system, do you have any advice on how to make it work effectively?

Dear Primrose, do you have a filter at the begining of your watering system, we have very hard water round our way and this seems to stop that problem. Well the system at one of the gardens where i work has never had any problems with one of these filters fitted.

Do you have the smaller pipes fitted, that run from the main pipe or just the sprinklers directly from the main pipe. If you don't have the smaller pipes it might be worth thinking about installing them.

They also do special push in the ground clips that will hold the pipe where needed, you might be able to make your own if you get some thick wire.
Kind Regards, Old Herbaceous.

There's no fool like an old fool.

Yes, there is a filter fitted, and in the veggie patch, we have several little thin pipes running off the main hose which are connected to stand-up spikes which have little sprinklers in the top. We're coming to the conclusion that here, where some of the foliage grows quite tall, it's going to be better to attach these spikes to some taller sticks/canes so that the water sprays over a wider area. The main problem is the rigidity of the main black hose. Every time we take it up each winter, it never gets relaid in exactly the same position, so one year some sprinkler rosettes are in one side of the hose, the next year they seem to be facing the opposite direction. In my narrow bean/tomato border I obviously want to water the plants and not the adjacent lawn. The system is obviously better than nothing, especially if you're away on holiday but I'm wondering whether a soaker hose might have been a less troublesome option. Anybody out there using a soaker hose who can comment on its effectiveness when growing vegetables?
