I am currently erecting a polytunnel and about a quarter of the area will be on the sight of a very wide path (about 4 foot wide). I've started to dig it over and it is very compact and has patches of clay in it. The soil seems to be slightly different to the rest of the plot.

I guess I should just try dig it over / break it up and dig in some muck. I was wondering, is there anything else I should consider doing?

Incorporate manure and sand, perhaps double dig it.

Approximately how much sand as a rough ratio?

As much as you're comfortable with buying and moving.
Think of potting compost ratios, I'd probably spread it between 1" & 3" deep then dig it in, maybe even rotovate once manure added.
