Our village is quite isolated with fields all around us, there's a footpath we use, you can go to the beach or go round the fields back to the other side of the village. I've not been much this year, but building up my fitness we went today, no sign of the Warblers or Whitethroats we saw last year yet, but two Yellowhammers and at least ten singing Skylarks made the short walk superb. The farmers have mostly Barley in the fields, they rotate yearly, last year were tatties and next it will be Rape seed. The other side of the stream there's tatties(no sign of growing yet), a couple of Cow fields on the hillside and Rye on the hill top for the distillery who make Rye Whisky and Potato Vodka.

My husband is a pretty avid bird watcher & he says there are big drops in sightings from his group as well.

I envy your Yellowhammers, haven't seen one for years. We haven't any warblers yet either but lots of Skylarks, I put it down to new hearing aids but perhaps they are doing well.

The first time our son came to visit us nearly 20 years ago he described it as a "waiting to die village" rather unkind Army dark humour. The village has doubled in size since we moved in, so new younger families in the new houses, but we are almost all bungalows with older people in. Since the pub closed and was converted into flats it's got even quieter now, post office was closed so our village shop went too, there is a village primary school for the area. Seven miles from the nearest town and around a mile from the sea, we are rural without being isolated, lots of nice country walks which kept us sane during the covid lockdown. I was born in Leicester but raised in the county, so always been a "teuchter" as some of the less generous Doric speakers might say(that's country bumpkin rather than village idiot).
