I'm giving up my hens - so if anyone needs a couple of very nice henhouses, at a reasonable price, then please pm me. Wimborne, Dorset.

I'm just trying to simplify life a little....to be able to go away for a few days without all the hassle and forward planning of asking friends to look after the hens every time. We are both getting on a bit (just a bit!) and have decided to free ourselves of some of the responsibilities of keeping animals for a while. Our old cat has died too...last week....and we now have just one middle aged cat and our friend is very happy to feed and fuss him should be want to go away for a few days.

I found a nice new home for the hens....and - to be honest - when they went it was all a bit of a relief.

That's all really. Just want a bit of fun whilst we can still remember who we are and what day it is....

Thank you for asking Robo.

We had the same idea a few years ago then life gave us a kicking but for a few years it was good now we have decided we have to sell our finca in Spain as we have our grandson and his dog living with us and once again we have to plan our ever move instead of just doing what we want even now I'm planning our next leasure pursuit I just have to put it on hold for a few years, enjoy your free time

Yes, some of these moves feel very sad, especially when it involves breaking up a long term happy custom but as we all inevitably grow a little older it,s probably better to make the changes voluntarily rather than having them forced on you in a time of crisi. That way you have time to adjust before the next blockbuster of increasing age or Ill health turns up to bowl you over. Sorry about your cat. A lot of animal losses to deal with in one week, even if the hens have gone to a good home.

Good luck with your plans Diane, I've almost stopped poultry keeping a few times recently for the same reasons as you. Sorry about your cat too. My little cat Blossom dropped dead while I was away visiting my son before Christmas. She was 17 but was still very lively so it was quite a shock. I still have six hens and although not planning on having another cat we've been adopted by a very lively young Tom cat who has taken up residence in one of the old hen huts. So my plans haven't quite worked out yet.

Cats are funny....although I miss our old one terribly - we still have the middle aged one...who has taken to inviting next doors cat in, through two cat flaps, to socialise in our kitchen, lounge, upstairs, on our bed, behind the sofas...where ever you can fit one cat in..there are now two again. I'm not encouraging it though in case we upset our neighbours. But it just shows how adaptable cats are.....he's missing his friend so he's just gone out and grabbed himself another one!

Cats are indeed funny! My oldest black cat leaves us for a couple of weeks each year & moves in with a girl down the road. She is vegan but Echo still stays that long eating bread & drinking almond milk. Weird, but we have figured it co-incides with when the middle cat goes into season. Will test that theory next year, as it is last litter middle cat will be having as she has (may have), finally filled the waiting list for kittens.
