Mrs Gull (on the left of the picture) returned to her perch outside our back door a couple of days ago after a long absence hatching her this year's chick. During her absence Owain (on the right) had spent much of every day on the top of the bird feeder moping. Now he spends all his time with her looking a lot more at ease.

How do tell the M from the F - they all look the same to me!

Female smaller and less noisy, rather smoother plumage.

I take it you don't share our affection for Larus argentatus

This pair have for years got into the habit of coming for their breakfast every morning. They are very possessive of our field and garden and are ultra efficient at keeping all other gulls away. They are also a perfect example of fidelity; they are paired for life.

Hi Alan,

They are considered vermin around here. The are thousands of them. Most homeowners have anti-gull nesting devices on their roofs, but there are still some that don't bother.

When you have about 20 gulls swooping and screaming around every time you enter the garden, it ain't much fun. When they have young around, they even fly around at night as well.

Cars and property are constantly covered in gull sh*t as well
Cheers PJ.
