Hello Tim,
If it is a Briggs & Stratton engine, which I would expect it would be if as per original, then he needs to have a check on the engine cowling tinwork to find the 3 sets of numbers Model, Type, Code.
They will likely be on the flat vertical section that faces the carb' and will be stamped into the tinwork...it may be that they are hidden under a repaint or masked by rust ...but they will be there unless a new cowling has been fitted in the life of the engine...or if a cowling off another engine has been fitted, then they may be erroneous.!
Sometimes if hard to read they can be traced with pencil and paper.
The last set, Code, will give date of engine manufacture;...Year,Month,Day, Factory
With the numbers you can freely download a representative operating manual and also the very same parts list that a service agent would use.
http://www2.briggsandstratton.com/maint ... _and_more/ is the link to start from.
Briggs & Stratton regular engine service parts should be widely available at most garden machinery agents.. A full service manual is available to purchase...but do specify the engine type it is required to suit..as this engine may now not be covered in the mainstream book for current engines.??
Richard T' who posts on this forum has started a support service for Merry Tiller...his website can be found here; http://www.merrytiller.co.uk/
All the best,
Clive.
