Old transaxle external drive pulley components:
(It is clear now that it is internal where the error is on the transaxle)

As per pics but a washer and a key to stop pulley rotating freely are worn.
Not useless but worn to almost non functionality.
(Not the reason for this drive problem)

found a online parts diag for a transaxle – Spicer dana 4450 3
pic shows input shaft

Mechanical mower transaxles are nearly all made by Peerless. There seems to be quite a lot of how to strip them videos and instructions on the net. It is worth having a look inside the unit. I have a feeling the castings are very flimsy, so be careful when you split it, though never done one myself.

Unfortunately Spicer make these transaxles and I'm still trying to find who has parts for them.
Peerless don't make these ones unfortunately.

While waiting I will split the case and
see if anything obvious is wrong.
Will advise

Uodate:
- await second hand transaxle to arrive
- emailed Murray and Hayter as to where I can get parts
for Spicer/ dana 4450 3 transaxles.
- still to split broke transaxle cases to investigate if anything
obvious has shifted or broken.

Update:

Mower fixed with a second hand transaxle.
Grass cut just before best ever spring weather ended !

I would still like to know where or if you can get snapped / broken drive shafts mended or remade as these old mowers need to be kept going !

That's good news. Are you still going to try opening up the old one to see if you can work out what went wrong inside? You could make yourself a spare.

Yes I have split the transaxle casings . The drive shaft
has snapped on one end.
Hayter and Murray dont stock parts anymore and I have contacted spicer / dana the makers of axle.
I have also contacted a machine co who make new axles so I can get an idea of cost.

I'll report with who when I get details.

(As a side note I must get my fathers old merrytiller out. It works but I have a front end for it with a cylinder striping blade mechanism that hasnt for 40 years ..... I'll start a new post on that.)

Thanks for sharing your experiences, Jules.
Please could you let me know where you sourced the second hand TA and how much it cost?
Many thanks
